Narration is used to paint a picture or set a mood. It's used to explain, instruct, teach or present information, suitably & convincingly.
In drama narration, the audience hears a voice (sometimes the main character) narrating the unfolding events. It can hugely contribute to the atmosphere of the piece. Think of the classic movie scene: Deckard's narration in the original Bladerunner and how it really sets the tone.
In documentary narration, listeners can be transported to wondrous places by the narrator. It can be used to cover difficult scene transitions or to fill in gaps in the story and give it structure and atmosphere.
